Before performing a hard reset on your iPhone, you need to make sure that your phone does really need it. This is because a hard reset will restore everything to its factory settings.

So, when you encounter a problem on your phone and only a hard reset would resolve the issue, you will lose all of your data if you forget to backup prior to that event. Nevertheless, a hard reset is only necessary when your iPhone is no longer responding to the basic troubleshooting steps.

For instance, a frozen or black screen appears on your iPhone 6 randomly. And even if you leave it for a few hours now, it won’t do anything.

Basic Troubleshooting Steps

The first troubleshooting step that you would normally do is to turn it off. And when this fails, you would certainly resort to restarting your phone.

You can restart your phone by simply holding the Sleep/Wake button until the Slide To Off option prompts on the screen. And then, you simply slide it to Off so that the phone would restart. This process is known as the Soft Restart.

By and large, these two basic troubleshooting steps can resolve most issues on iPhones. But if these two options fail and do not resolve the problem, that is the time that you will need to do a hard restart.

Doing A Hard Restart

Now, a Hard Restart is normally the last resort to any troubleshooting step. For an iPhone 6, you can perform this by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds.

After this period, you should see the Apple logo on the screen and that is the time you release the buttons.

Once the Apple logo has loaded, you would see different steps. And in order for you to use your phone again, you should follow them. You will find these steps familiar because they are the first things that you did when you first unwrapped your phone after purchasing it.

Accordingly, if you were able to backup everything on iCloud or iTunes, you can restore all your data back to your phone including the apps, photos, and settings. But, if you weren’t able to do a backup, just think of it as a newly purchased iPhone.

Factory Reset Through iPhone

A hard restart and a factory reset are not that different from each other. The only difference is a force restart is normally done because you want to do it. As for a hard restart, you do it because you have no choice.

You can do a force restart through your iPhone even without the press and hold steps. All you need to do is to go to the Settings application and choose General from the list.

On the bottom part of the General section, you will see a Reset option. Tap it and it will lead you the Reset page.

Now, you have two options to reset your phone. One is to Reset All Settings and two is the Erase All Content and Settings.

If you choose the first one, your phone will only reset all the settings to its default settings. And all of your data will not be erased from the phone. On the other hand, choosing the latter option will erase everything for you.

So, before you do a factory reset, make sure that you backup everything on the iCloud.

Also, before you can proceed in doing these, you will be asked to input your Apple ID and its associated password. Without these, you cannot do a factory reset.
